Learn more about LATISSE at our Albuquerque med spa

Lately many of my devoted LATISSE patients here in Albuquerque have come to me with questions about over-the-counter eyelash growth products they’ve seen online and in magazines. While they’re happy with LATISSE, they’re curious to know more about OTC products such as CryBaby™ and Cilea™ and whether they work as well.

It is important to consider the effects different treatments will have on your skin and health before using them. Here are my answers to 3 of the most common questions I have received about OTC lash growth products compared to LATISSE, which you need a prescription for.

Are OTC eyelash growth products safe?

This is a great question, and possibly the most important. First and foremost, OTC products are not approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). This means they lack clinical, government-sanctioned testing, analysis, and research. Without FDA approval, a product’s safety is unknown.

I support the use of LATISSE, which is FDA-approved and has been scientifically proven to provide effective results without dangerous side effects. Remember, using medical-grade products on your skin, especially on highly sensitive areas such as your eyes, is the best way to ensure your safety and your results.

If you’re unsure whether a product is FDA-approved, you can visit the government-regulated Food and Drug Administration and search the list of approved drugs and products. Products and drugs are not required to carry the FDA-approval on their label, making it difficult to determine their status.

Are they effective?

When products lack FDA approval, they have not been subjected to extensive scientific testing. This makes it impossible to know exactly how effective a product can be, especially long-term. So, while you may see some minor results from an OTC product, they aren’t guaranteed.

Are they affordable?

Although OTC products may cost less than medical-grade products, their effects may only last a fraction of the time. You could wind up spending the same amount of money on repeated uses of the OTC product as you would just once for the medical-grade product.

It is important to remember these factors if you’re considering using any eyelash growth product. Be sure to do as much research as possible, and never hesitate to contact me with questions.
