Dermal fillers are treatments used to address signs of aging, as well as to make preferential adjustments to facial contouring. As we age, our skin loses flexibility and the capability to retain moisture and produce collagen. This loss of volume and sagging skin results in wrinkles, folds, loss of contour, and hollowness.
Surgical procedures have enabled men and women to look younger and longer, but non-surgical procedures are now able to have a dramatic effect on combating the signs of aging as well.
Injecting facial fillers or dermal fillers for restoration and enhancements is highly skill-dependent. It does not matter how long someone has been injecting as injection techniques have changed over time. Aesthetic norms have evolved, and injection products have been refined.

Facial Fillers / Dermal Fillers
Skin fillers are injected into the skin to restore your youthful appearance by lifting and contouring your face, removing wrinkles and folds, and filling in the shadows that make you look gaunt. They are relatively painless procedures and you can see the results instantly!
At AlluraDerm MD Med Spa, we use only the safest, FDA-approved dermal fillers to help patients achieve a more youthful and aesthetically pleasing appearance. The fillers we use are the JUVÉDERM® family of fillers, which is the industry’s leader in dermal fillers.
Lip Fillers
The lips are a natural focal point of the human face. With age, there is a natural loss of volume both within the lip itself and the surrounding area. However, it is not simply a matter of injecting fillers into those areas to produce a more restored and youthful appearance.
Lips have a complex interplay of tissues such that placing filler in one area may alter the way another area looks. Because of this, lip restoration or augmentation is extremely individualized.
The physician injectors at AlluraDerm MD Med Spa provide patients with the time and knowledge necessary for determining an appropriate treatment plan. We want to ensure that patients achieve their desired effect while receiving the best possible care!
JUVÉDERM® ULTRA XC or ULTRA PLUS XC
JUVÉDERM® Ultra or Ultra Plus are skin fillers that are used to add volume and hydration to aging skin. Both JUVÉDERM® Ultra and JUVÉDERM® Ultra Plus are FDA approved for nasolabial folds and marionette lines and can last up to one year!
Their secret is the HylacrossTM technology that gives a hydrated appearance to the skin. They each have different properties, so the physician injector will choose the most appropriate filler and discuss the options with you. JUVÉDERM® ULTRA XC is also FDA-approved for lip augmentation!
SKINVIVE™ by JUVÉDERM®
Skinvive by JUVÉDERM® is the first and only FDA-approved hyaluronic acid (HA) microdroplet injectable in the U.S. to improve skin smoothness of the cheeks. By increasing hydration from within, Skinvive temporarily improves smoothness and provides a lasting glow for up to six months with optimal treatment.
In clinical studies, patients treated with Skinvive reported higher satisfaction with how glowing, hydrated, refreshed and healthy their skin looked through six months compared to before treatment. With a quick, 15-minute session and minimal downtime, all skin types and tones can enjoy the long-lasting radiance of Skinvive.
JUVÉDERM® VOLUMA XC
JUVÉDERM® Voluma XC is the first and only injectable treatment that’s been FDA-approved to correct a loss of volume in the cheeks due to age.
What makes this product unique from other facial and dermal fillers is its safety and efficacy data for deep injections to produce a natural lift. In fact, Voluma is FDA approved to be injected in the supraperiosteal plane, which is right on top of bone, the same plane where some surgical implants are placed.

JUVÉDERM® Voluma is called VOLIFT in Europe and had been in the European market before entering the United States. In 2013, Voluma was FDA approved in the U.S.A. and is the first in the family of the patented Vycross™ technology. Voluma adds subtle, youthful-looking contours to the face, and the results of a single treatment can last for up to 2 years.
JUVÉDERM® VOLBELLA XC
Imagine having fewer wrinkles or more youthful lips for up to a year! Well, now you can! JUVÉDERM® Volbella is FDA approved for injection into the lips for a subtle augmentation and for wrinkle correction around the mouth.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Q: What is JUVÉDERM®?
The main dermal or skin fillers we use are the JUVÉDERM® family of fillers, which includes Voluma XC, Vollure XC, Volbella XC, Ultra XC, and Ultra Plus XC. The JUVÉDERM® family of fillers is made from hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring sugar molecule found in skin and joints.
JUVÉDERM® is the industry’s leader in skin fillers and the #1 filler in the world. Since JUVÉDERM® entered the arena, it has become the industry’s leader thanks to the superior results it has achieved. Terms like “JUVÉDERM® lip injection” have now become common names.
Q: Why choose the JUVÉDERM® family of fillers?
This line of products is fantastic at restoring volume loss, such as cheek and lip volume, that has occurred due to aging, exercise, or diet.
These fillers are excellent for what some people call the “parenthesis” or smile lines that border the lips, the nasolabial folds that run down from the corners of the nose to the corners of the lips, and the fold lines that run down from the corner of the mouth, commonly known as the marionette lines.
When used correctly, fillers can contour, restore, or lift the face to give a healthier, more youthful, and more refreshed appearance. Different fillers have unique physical properties that our physician injectors utilize to restore or enhance the appearance. Much like an artist using a palette of colors to create a masterpiece, Dr. Mancha uses the range of fillers to create the desired result.

Q: Which areas can we treat with dermal fillers like JUVÉDERM®?
JUVÉDERM® family of fillers has different FDA approvals for each filler in its portfolio. Voluma is FDA approved for the cheeks. Ultra, Ultra Plus, and Vollure are FDA approved for perioral areas including nasolabial folds and marionette lines. Ultra and Volbella are FDA approved for the lips, and Volbella is FDA approved for vertical lip lines.
However, dermal fillers have been used to treat temples, buccal areas, ear lobes, jawline, chin, and necklines. In the past, they have also been used to treat glabella lines, or “elevens”, and the nose for non-surgical rhinoplasty.
However, there have been recent reports of rare cases of blindness when treating these areas with any fillers (including fat transfer, Sculptra, and radiesse). Although this has never happened at AlluraDerm MD Med Spa, we have chosen not to continue treating these areas with fillers.
Q: What are Radiesse, Sculptra, and Bellafill?
Radiesse, Sculptra, and Bellafill belong to a group of facial or dermal fillers that are non-hyaluronic acid-based fillers. They can potentially last longer and stimulate collagen where injected.
However, there is no reversal for them. If they do not produce a satisfactory result, there is no injection to bring things back to the way it was. Also, although stimulation of collagen may be a good thing, it can lead to nodules or lumps that cannot be dissolved by an enzyme.
More importantly, if they compress a blood vessel, there is no reversal to save the skin from ischemia, which is a major catastrophe. The skin turns purple and dies off, leaving a hole in the area the blood vessel supplies, not just the area the filler is injected. For these reasons, we do not use non-hyaluronic acid fillers at AlluraDerm.
Q: What are cheek fillers?
Cheek fillers are facial or dermal fillers that are injected into the cheek region to help produce a more youthful and natural appearance. When injected correctly, they can lift, contour, and shape the face to restore its natural appearance.
Each filler on the market has different physical properties and different evidence of its safety and efficacy in a particular area of the face. We use the JUVÉDERM® Collection to restore cheek volume.
JUVÉDERM® Voluma is a classic FDA-approved cheek filler. Voluma is by far the market leader in this arena due to its physical properties and robust scientific data on safety and efficacy.
For example, JUVÉDERM® Voluma is the only filler in the group that has been tested in peer-reviewed literature to reveal that aspiration tests can show a positive result within clinical settings of 2 seconds of negative pressure. This means that if the needle is in a blood vessel, only JUVÉDERM® Voluma will allow reflux of blood in a 2-second aspiration, but not any other filler in the U.S.A.
Since the cheek has many branches of blood vessels, such as the infraorbital artery, this safety property reduces the risk of intra-arterial injection and ischemia. Of course, knowledge of anatomy and key techniques play an important role in safety.
But ultimately, aspiration tests with JUVÉDERM® Voluma make it even safer than other fillers can offer. It is akin to a good driver using defensive driving to reduce the risk of a car accident and the Voluma is the safety belt.
Other fillers like Radiesse, Bellafill, and Sculptra are not hyaluronic acid-based fillers and do not have a reversal agent or enzyme to dissolve them. Hence, the risk of injecting them into an area filled with blood vessels, such as a cheek, is not an endeavor that the physician injectors at AlluraDerm practice.
Also, although they are used in the cheek, at the time of writing, they are not FDA approved to treat volume loss in the cheek area per se. Bellafill is FDA approved to treat the cheek area, but only for superficial placement to treat acne scars. Radiesse is FDA approved to treat facial wrinkles such as nasolabial folds. The FDA approval for Sculptra does not mention the check.
Also, we must remember that the cheek is not simply one location in the face. There are various regions and zones that the physician injector will consider when determining the most beneficial treatment for each patient.
Indeed, the most important factor for an aesthetically pleasing result from a cheek filler is the injector. Unlike the use of fillers to treat lines and folds, the use of cheek fillers to restore or augment a person’s appearance depends not only on the technical skill and anatomical knowledge but also on the artistic visualization of the injector.
Q: What is the difference between JUVÉDERM® and Botox®?
JUVÉDERM®, or JUVÉDERM® family of fillers, is biologically compatible sugar molecules known as hyaluronic acid that is stabilized and injected in the face to fill in volume loss, contour the face, enhance the lips, and reduce the appearance of folds and shadow.
Botox® is purified proteins that, when injected into muscles, reduce the appearance of lines and wrinkles created by muscle movements such as the “elevens” between the eyes and crows feet.

How Much Do Dermal Fillers Like JUVÉDERM® cost?
The cost of dermal fillers depends on the injector and the amount used. Each full-size syringe in the JUVÉDERM® family of fillers is 1 ml of volume, about 1/5 of a teaspoon.
At AlluraDerm, all injections are performed by physician injectors.
