How to Properly Cleanse Your Face
Washing our face is something we’ve done since our teens, so it’s easy to find ourselves in a rut. We know to wash, tone and moisturize, but most of us focus on what products we use for the tone and moisturize part of the problem, neglecting the importance of washing the face properly.
In fact, the technique you use to wash your face can not only help to clear your skin of blemishes, it can also increase the effectiveness of your toner, moisturizer and anti-aging products.
Always wash off your makeup. Keep cleansing cloths handy if you have problems with this. Leaving on your makeup at night invites icky bacteria to…
Wash your hands before your face. Just like you should avoid touching your face to prevent acne, you want to prevent transferring bacteria from your hands to your face by washing them before cleansing your skin.
Wash with lukewarm water. Hot water dries out your skin, aging it more quickly. Just like over-scrubbing, it can also lead to broken capillaries.
Don’t scrub too harshly. Scrubbing too harshly can over-stimulate your oil glands, increasing production and make acne worse. It can also lead to broken capillaries under your eyes. Avoid scrubbing too hard and rely on a skincare brush if you have acne-prone skin.
Use circular motions. To resist the temptation to scrub, use small, circular motions to gently cleanse the skin. This cleanses the pores without being too harsh on the skin.
Rinse with cool water. If you rinse with hot water, it keeps your pores open to all of the dirt and bacteria it is sure to encounter during the day. Rinse with cool water to keep your pores the same size they were when you started.
Pat dry. Don’t rub your skin with a washcloth, pat it dry instead. Patting your skin dry helps skin retain some of its moisture and avoid pulling on delicate skin.
Treating your skin gently is key when it comes to washing your face. Pulling on the skin, treating it harshly by scrubbing it and leaving on makeup all negatively affect your skin elasticity. Baby your skin and you’ll be treated to baby-soft skin in return.
